Verification of Death Expected

Course Description

This course is for Registered Nurses working in Residential Homes, Nursing Homes or other community settings who wish to take on the extended role of verification of expected death. It is an evidence-based, clinical course which will ensure that participants have the knowledge and competencies necessary to correctly verify death.

Essential Requirements:

  • Participants should be Registered Nurses with current, active NMC registration

The organisation they work for must have an up to date policy for the verification of expected death by registered nurses which is in line with their local NHS policy

Recommended Requirements:

It is highly recommended that participants also attend the following courses provided by Embark Learning:

  • Principles of Palliative Care for Nurses and Managers
  • Care at the End of Life

Course Outline

Attendance on the course will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Understand the role of the Registered Nurse in Verification of Death
    and the conditions set by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) when
    undertaking this role
  • Identify the circumstances when it would be appropriate and helpful for a Registered Nurse to be able to fulfil this role
  • Differentiate between verification and certification of death
  • Outline the differences between expected death and other patterns of dying
  • Explain the terms palliative care, terminal care, end of life care, dying and death
  • Give clinical descriptions of systemic death, cellular death, brain death and brain stem death
  • List the accepted clinical signs of death
  • Demonstrate competency in carrying out the clinical observations required to correctly verify death
  • Identify the documentation that needs to be completed before, during and after verification of expected death, according to local policy

Course Duration



The trainer will carry out an on-going assessment.


All delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.


The course can be delivered at locations to suit the client or at one of our training venues.
