More About This Course

Palliative Care Training

End of life, or palliative care is one of the most important and sensitive roles in healthcare. It takes a special skill set to offer palliative care, with attention having to be paid to a range of physical and emotional issues.

What is End of Life Care?

End of life care aims to help if you have a life-limiting or life-threatening illness. The focus of palliative care is to manage symptoms, to reduce pain and offer assistance and comfort. The aim is to make someone’s final months, weeks and days as comfortable as possible. As well as looking after physical and medical needs, it means taking care of the emotional, spiritual and social needs as well. This makes it a challenging, but incredibly rewarding role. It’s also one that needs proper training and preparation to be done well.

Why is End of Life Care so important?

The final days of someone’s life are incredibly important, not only for the dying patient themselves, but also for their family and other loved ones. The manner of death, the patient’s comfort and the emotional wellbeing of their loved ones are all impacted by those last days. The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of life of the dying patient, however long they have left, and the quality of life of their family, friends and carers. This makes end of life care perhaps the most holistic caring role there is. It’s an important, challenging and rewarding job.

Who may need End of Life Care training?

You don’t need to be a palliative care specialist to benefit from end of life care training. In fact, anyone who works in a care setting where people face the end of life should have some grounding in how best to provide palliative care. This might be care workers in care home settings, staff at a local health centre or clinic, people in religious/spiritual roles, people working for local government agencies and other medical professionals. Anyone who has care for any aspect of a terminally ill person’s well-being would benefit from end of life care training.

Training can help the professional face the challenges of dying patients, enabling them to better deal with the emotional challenges that it presents. It can give carers and other professionals the skills they need to be able to properly support the family and other loved ones of the dying patients.
