Medication Safe Administration

Course Description

This is a course aimed at staff working within all care settings whose main role is to prompt and or administer medication mainly from monitored dosage systems but from other forms also. The course covers the information needed to support the safe administration of medicines. This is a theory only session which will require a practical element for sign of competency provided by employer.

Course Outline

  • Understand the difference between prompting, administering and advanced administrations with special techniques of medicines
  • Understand the roles of those involved in safe handling of medicines
  • Gain an overview of some of the primary pieces of legislation covering the safe handling of medicines
  • Understand the 8 rights of medication administration
  • Understand medication record keeping including and use of Medication Administration Records
  • Labeling of medicines
  • The main routes of administration
  • Correct equipment for administering medicines
  • Cover the knowledge needed for administration of oral, topical, instilled (eye & ear drops) inhaled (not including nebuliser) medicines
  • Dealing with medication errors and refusal

Assessment

The trainer will carry out an on-going assessment.

Certification

All delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.

The course can be delivered at locations to suit the client or at one of our training venues.
