More About This Course

Medication Awareness Training

Most people working in the health and social care sector are going to encounter dealing with medication as part of their general duties. People in residential care often have complex medication needs. Ensuring they receive the correct medication in a timely and safe fashion is a key part of their care. Making certain that everyone employed in the care sector has an understanding of medication is therefore a key priority.

Medication training for carers is essential

Medication training for carers is essential. This will include people working in care home settings such as care workers, support workers, nursing assistants and other front-line care roles. Medication awareness training covers the basic administration, managing, handling and prescribing of medicines in a safe and professional manner. It provides a comprehensive overview of how to manage the medication needs of care home residents and looks at the legal responsibilities that are involved. It also provides an all-round foundation for the safe administration of medicines and should ensure that anyone who has undergone the training is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their duties.

What does the course involve?

The course begins by exploring what exactly medication is. It looks at how medications are used to cure disease or infection or to stabilise an existing condition or to provide pain relief. In any care setting where medication is handled, stored and administered, there needs to be a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities.

It also explores the correct way to store medication in order to maintain safety and efficacy. A key part of the course is legal requirements around medication. Understandably, where medication is concerned, the legislation is exact and needs to be fully understood. Legislation and local policy also determines how unwanted or left-over medication is disposed of. By the end of the course participants will have a good grounding in the safe and legal, handling, administration, storage and disposal of medication.
